In recent years, India’s rapid development has brought big changes to many industries — and the travel retail market is no exception. What used to be simple shops at airports and transit areas are now turning into full retail destinations, generating impressive revenue.

Sameer Mahandru, a well-known expert in the alcoholic beverages (AlcoBev) industry, shares his thoughts on how this market is growing and what’s driving its expansion.

India’s travel retail sector is growing fast. It’s expected to reach USD 2.47 billion by 2025 and could grow to USD 6.56 billion by 2030, with a yearly growth rate of 21.59%. At New Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport, 70% of the total income now comes from non-aeronautical sources. Out of this, 34% comes from food, beverage, retail, and duty-free outlets — showing just how important shopping and dining have become in travel spaces.
